How do you drill a gemstone?

Like any good rock hound, you probably have your fair share of loose gems or crystals in your collection. Sometimes it’s enough to own them and keep them stored away. However, there are some precious finds you simply want to enjoy on a daily basis- along with the rest of your jewelry. The solution to this is much simpler than you think!

In this video, Shawn turns a tourmaline crystal and an aquamarine crystal into wearable works of art. He transforms these crystals into pendants using only a diamond drill bit and a bail. Shawn uses two of the most common methods to drill into the crystals.

Depending on the size and shape of your crystal, you can determine which method is best for your gemstone with the help of a professionally trained bench jeweler.

  1. I miss Shawn in the morning lineup. He always had interesting loose gems and reminded me of true rockhounds I know. Thanks for sharing this video.
